Today, after finishing work just before the store closed at 7 p.m., my husband and I hurriedly went to the restaurant we wanted to eat at. We arrived at Xiao Xian Rou Yuan a little after 6 p.m., and luckily, there were available seats, so we were fortunate enough to dine in. It was great! The indoor seating area of this restaurant is small, probably only accommodating four to six seats, so I'm glad we were able to dine in successfully. The main reason being that we wanted to eat the crispy pork dumplings today! If there were no seats available, we would have had to get them to go, but they might not have been as crispy when we got home, so dining in was definitely the better option, hehe.
It seems like Hsinchu doesn't often have the kind of pork dumplings with an extra crispy skin like the ones, similar to the style of Da Jia Jia Le pork dumplings in central Taiwan. So, being able to find a place in Hsinchu that serves such crispy pork dumplings nearby made me very happy.
The star of today's meal was indeed crispy, but not to the extent of turning into a biscuit-like texture like Da Jia Jia Le. The outside was crispy, and the inside was thick and chewy, which made it very delicious. As for the filling, the meat pieces had a peppery marinade flavor, and combined with the bamboo shoots, the meat chunks were quite large and substantial. The filling was really tasty. Of course, they topped it with the soul of the pork dumplings—rice sauce—sweet and savory, the perfect combination. The sauce we chose today was garlic and chili flavor, with a generous amount of minced garlic. And yes, it was really spicy! It made me sweat and feel a burning sensation, but it was truly satisfying. ❤️
We ordered a mixed soup to share, with a base of big bone soup and topped with scallions. It was served with fish balls, gong wan (a type of meatball), fish paste, and a piece of tofu. The big bone soup was not overly salty but also not too thick. It had a mild and enjoyable flavor. Surprisingly, both the fish balls and gong wan were delicious. I say this because I don't usually eat fish, and I only occasionally have fish balls, so it's rare for me. The fish balls we had today were stuffed fish balls, similar to the ones from Fuzhou, but they were really tasty and didn't have any fishy taste, so I could accept them. The fish paste was also good.
While we were dining in today, there were constant phone calls to the restaurant for takeout orders, and customers kept coming in directly to make purchases. The business was doing well. The food we had today was indeed very delicious, and it was an unexpected surprise. It's great that we don't have to go all the way to Da Jia anymore just to satisfy our craving for crispy pork dumplings. Wonderful! 🥰
On the way back home, I stopped by Yi Li Jia Baozi on Zhongyang Road and bought a taro paste bun as a dessert after dinner. It was my first time buying their taro paste bun, and when I cut it open at home, the taro paste released a fragrant aroma, somewhat similar to the scent of taro pastry. It was soft, sweet, and the filling was prepared deliciously. The unexpected delight of the taro paste bun made it a perfect dessert after a meal.
Previously, when I went to Yi Li Jia, I would always buy the bamboo shoot and pork bun and the fresh meat bun. Their bamboo shoot and pork bun is incredibly tasty, with the bamboo shoot and meat filling mixed evenly together. The flavor is slightly rich, and I find it less greasy compared to the fresh meat bun. The taste is more diverse, so I highly recommend the bamboo shoot and pork bun! I'll share more about it next time I go to buy them.
