That day, my husband and I went to our favorite Yayuan Hong Kong-style dim sum restaurant in Taipei. Since it was in the afternoon and past the peak dining hours, we were lucky enough not to have to wait and were seated quickly.

Yayuan is a restaurant we love and have been to many times. We have a fixed ordering routine and there are always some favorite dishes that we must order. Like the shrimp dumplings, dry-fried beef rice noodles, char siu pastries, and siu mai! We love them so much. Unfortunately, they were out of shrimp rice rolls that day, which was a pity because it's also a must-order item. But what was even more unfortunate was...

On that day, I had a lunch gathering with friends, and my husband was busy until after lunch. He had the afternoon off, so we happily went to eat at that time. That means... I wasn't really hungry... to go and eat such delicious food when I couldn't eat much, it made me want to cry.

But on that day, I was determined despite feeling almost full. I still managed to take a few bites of the dry-fried beef rice noodles, one shrimp dumpling, and one char siu pastry. I ate until my stomach felt like it was going to explode. It was both hilarious and greedy of me. (Yes, it was.)

However, the dry-fried beef rice noodles at Yayuan were genuinely delicious. They had a strong wok aroma and were incredibly flavorful. Although the color was dark, they weren't too salty. They were very satisfying to eat, with large and tender beef pieces. The color and aroma of soy sauce and dark soy sauce were fully brought out, achieving a perfect balance of savory and sweet. The scallions and bean sprouts inside added fantastic flavor and provided a crispy and tender texture. The dish had excellent presentation, aroma, taste, and texture. The ingredients were simple, but it showcased the skills of the chef. I'm typing and salivating at the same time because it's almost dinner time, and I'm so hungry.

The char siu pastry is like an elegant princess among dim sum. Its layers of flaky pastry resemble a beautiful and delicate dress, making it hard to touch or disturb in any way. But there's no choice, as soon as you pick up the char siu pastry, the pastry flakes start falling off. It's just too soft and flaky. The sweet and hot char siu filling inside is as radiant as the scorching sun. If you rush to take a bite, it will scorch the lining of your mouth. You have to approach it slowly, just like pursuing a beloved goal. You can't act recklessly; you have to plan your moves and wait patiently for your efforts to pay off.

But I won't hesitate to eat it. I'll eat it quickly and let the pastry and the princess reunite. Sorry, it sounds like a romantic novel where the female protagonist is about to make an appearance. I'm just a straightforward and ordinary person. Let them all meet their destiny sooner rather than later.

Shrimp dumplings are the most subtly flavored dim sum in the Hong Kong-style repertoire. They consist of a translucent and shiny skin and shrimp filling. Just these two simple components that can't be disguised by any fancy embellishments. Therefore, whether the skin is made clear and translucent and whether the filling is fresh and bouncy are the key factors to verify the deliciousness of shrimp dumplings. Yayuan's shrimp dumplings are very tasty. The shrimp filling is firm and bouncy, and the skin is clear and chewy. Simple dipping in a little soy sauce and vinegar or a hint of yellow mustard brings out its deliciousness. It doesn't need excessive seasoning.

And speaking of shrimp dumplings, it seems that no matter which restaurant you go to, they always come in a basket of three. At least I haven't come across any restaurant that serves a different quantity. Because I really like shrimp dumplings, once they arrive, my husband and I each take one. After that, my husband won't touch the remaining shrimp dumpling even if I want to give it to him. He would refuse and insist that I eat it. I love you, my husband. (Except for this time at Yayuan, I was so full that my stomach was about to burst, and it was the first time my husband ate two shrimp dumplings, haha.)

Since I couldn't eat anymore that day, my husband finished the rest. I sat next to him, sipping tea and chatting. We had fragrant chrysanthemum tea that day, with a slightly bitter and floral flavor, perfect for a hot summer afternoon.

Finally, we took the leftover fish roe siu mai and vegetable beef meatballs home. They were still delicious when reheated. The siu mai had a solid and bouncy filling, simply tasty and satisfying. The beef meatballs, with added water chestnuts, had a slightly crispy texture when chewed and were overall fresh and sweet, without any meaty taste. They were soft but not loose in structure. I was impressed that they retained this level of quality even after microwaving. Next time, I'll also eat them on the spot!

Yayuan is so delicious. I will visit again the next time I'm in Taipei, although I always have a hard time choosing when I'm in Taipei because there are too many things I want to eat. I'm so indecisive.
